Stop and Smell the Roses

Oh! The Blood! The Blood!

Saturday was a most busy day. I drove over 135 miles that day, and I never left Southern California. The highlight of my weekend was spending Saturday night with Gus and Diane. The plan, originally, was to go to an English pub called The Underground in Hermosa Beach for a bit of meat pie and lager. Unfortunately, we chose a night when the college kids of Hermosa were having a Snuggie Pub Crawl and the pub was packed to the gills. No way were we eating there, let alone just getting a seat. So we made do at another bar and grill, enjoying large pints of Guinness and some mediocre fish and chips. Everyone knows those aren't proper chips nor should the fish be in sticks.
After that, it was off to El Camino College for their production of Sweeney Todd. I remember my friend Anette was in a production in Laguna Beach about a hundred years ago, but I don't think I'd ever seen the show live. It was an amazing cast, an amazing show. It was a very good time. This is what I'd love to do more of. Spending time at dinner, drinks and theater with good friends.

Play Ball

I missed a few weeks of ball games, and was feeling the guilt of being "bad uncle" so this week I put it top of my calendar: Little League Game @ 11am. Strangely, the 9am games are easier to attend, since I'm doing fuck all at that hour of the day. The 3pm games of the past two weeks, well, those are a bit harder. Eleven was a good compromise. I took myself down there and arrived just as the first inning was starting. I got to see Mathew at bat and then pitch an inning. Pretty cool. I didn't really get to talk to him much - he's starting to be at that age where he's more interested in his friends than in his Uncle. Even his grandma isn't supposed to call him "angel" in front of the other boys. He's growing up so fast. I just hope I can stay "cool" enough to hang with as he gets older.

Stop and Smell the Roses

I spent most of Sunday feeling very English in my small garden. I weeded and turned the earth and pinned up the trellises. I need to buy some ladybugs, because my roses are completely covered with aphids. How do they find the roses? In this giant globe... how can tiny little aphids find the one small rose bush and lay a billion eggs on it? Dang. So if you catch any ladybugs this spring, mail them to me.
