Company's Coming
Well, more to the point, Company came. Gus just finished his production this weekend, and I went with Diane and her beau John, Julissa and Diane's sister Kathy to see it. But first, we went to dinner at a rather nice Japanese place in Downey... Sambi, I believe it was called.
The play itself wasn't as good as I wanted it to be. Gus has outgrown that little Cerritos College crew. Actually, most of the actors were from Fullerton State, for some odd reason. But my biggest beef with the show overall was that the characters - who are almos tall 30-40-somethings - were played by 18-20-somethings who didn't have enough life experience to understand the cahracters. Bobby, who is lamenting being single and 30 in New York was played by an 18 yo boy who probably has no idea what angst is. Joanne, the over-40 bitter jaded alcoholic bitch was lpayed by a 20 yo girl who acted like a jack-in-the-box, bouncing from emotion to emotion as if it were an acting exercise instead of real life. Having said that, Gus was impressive. At every moment, he was present onstage. In the moment. Living the story, not just posturing and acting when he had lines. His presence was natural and believable and, frankly, he was the best male on the stage. Sure, som eof those Fullerton queens could belt, but when it came to acting, it was flat. Uninspired. Unbelievable. If you don't know the show, I recommend finding it and taking it in. It's a good commentary on relationships.
On Tour
And what am I looking forward to? Kylie, of course. News came out this week that she is doing her very first full-on US tour. I tried getting pre-sale tickets just 4 hours after they went on sale but they were sold out of the special tickets before I got any. So now I have to wait until I can get some "regular" tickets for the Hollywood Bowl. October 4. $200 per ticket. Cri-za-zy. But I'm going.
The Kiss Off
This week I am asking for donations on behalf of Diane and her "Kiss Off Cancer" team as she prepares for a 24 hour walking marathon this coming weekend. If you would care to help her team and make any size donation, click the link: Sponsor Diane.
