Death and Alcohol
I am terribly excited to be publishing this from my hotel room in New Orleans. What a fun city this is. I arrived Saturday after what seemed like 100 hours of flight (Los Angeles to Dallas to New Orleans) and checked into the historic Whitney hotel for a nap. Then I had to go see what the fuss was about. It isn't Mardi Gras. It isn't Southern Decadence. But you'd never know it from the loud Loud LOUD music being thrown onto the street in the French Quarter. People drinking down Bourbon Street, ladies flashing tits, people throwing beads from balconies... You'd swear it was Mardi Gras. But if this isn't it, I can't imagine what the real thing is like. Cri-za-zee.
Sunday began with some delicious New Orleans coffee and some beignets before a very historical Cemetery Tour. The tour guide, Greg, found me on Bear411 and invited me as his guest on the tour. It was quite a good tour, and a little creepy at times (seeing bones in open graves) and ended with a visit to a Voodoo Priestess's Temple. Then we went off for brunch, as gay people do. He then drove me around the Ninth Ward to see how Katrina affects the city even 4 years after the fact. It was time for another nap, by then. The heat takes it out of you. But then off to the New Orleans version of the "fruit loop" - Lafitte's, The Pub, Good Friends, and the Rawhide. There were drinks called "The Separator" and you got free drinks at the Rawhide if you were shirtless. I got free drinks. It is now Monday, and I have some Garden District to see before my classes in film making start tomorrow. Lessez les bons temps roullez!
My First Guest
For some it might be less thrilling, but for me it was brilliant: I had my first houseguest this past week. Thursday, after our school awards show and the Randy Blue live show, Don came over and we went out to grab a late night bite to eat. But first I forced him upstairs to my new place for a tour. I was giddy. Who's going to be my #2?
The End of it All
As I write this, my students are starting their first day with the sub. For me, it's all over. And I full expect to return to work next week to find my classroom a complete disaster.
