Scary Karaoke
Oh what fun to hear Michael Jackson songs mangled by drunken leathermen in a dive bar. No, I mean it. It WAS fun. And that was how I spent Monday night. I dragged Don out to The Bullet, a small, but very fun, bar in North Hollywood. On Mondays they do something called "Spank: The Dark Side of Karaoke" and I didn't understand it until the host, Alex, rubbed ice all over his body while one singer sang "I'll Stop the World and Melt With You." This was later followed by our very own Don dripping hot wax on Alex as Alex sang the Pointer Sisters' song "Fire". Dark side, indeed. Yes, Don also sang "Bizarre Love Triangle" (or was it another New Order song?) which brought the room to it's feet after one-too-many renditions of "Ben" and "We Are the World". He's dead. He hurt children. Get over it.
HIV: Negative
I love the Pasadena Community Health Center. Free HIV testing, no waiting. I used to go to Out of the Closet stores for their free anonymous testing, but they have one counselor so it takes 30 minutes per person. After 3-4 people, it's a two hour wait. But at the PCHC, they have lots of clinicians they can call in whenever there are more than 2 people waiting, so they take you right away. And less than half an hour later - results. In my case, what I expected, negative. But as last Saturday was National HIV Awareness Day, I figured I'd go get tested and make a story out of it. If you live anywhere near Pasadena, I suggest you look them up and get tested there. It's easy, clean and free.
A Quiet Not-Quiet Wednesday
Wednesday came and the week was rocking by. I finally convinced Gus to come see my new place (now one month old) and we hit the town after his rehearsal to celebrate life in general. Except nobody else was out. I think eleven homos in LA went out last Wednesday. We first went to the Eagle. It was 80's night and we hoped it would be fun. Adventures in Babysitting was on the big screen alongside hardcore leather porn. The music was fun, but we were among the few who noticed. So we left there to try out MJ's for Latin Night. Avoid Latin Night. Again, a handful of patrons - in fact, I think there were more strippers there than paying guests. On the plus side - no cover charge. On the plus-plus side, after we left, Gus and I went to Fred 62 and I tried their fried Mac & Cheese balls - Don had been telling me about them. They were... ok. I wasn't in love. But I did love the lovely time I had with Gus, even if it felt like a private night out on the town for just us two.
Too Wet for Fireworks
I spent the week checking out the men at my pool and enjoying the coolness of the water. And I love that I can drink poolside - even if I am drinking alone... But I spent most of my weekend (and my week) just lounging like my life was being lived at a resort. I didn't really do any "fireworks" related things this weekend. Just pooltime and playtime. It was a very good week.
