Roger, Calpernia, Don and Me
This was the weekend I've been waiting for through my illness and beyond. This was the weekend of my little cocktail party. Little was meant to be just a cute way of saying it, but it turned out to be very little. People went out of town, people got called in to work, people got sick, people just plain forgot. But the four of us had a great time: Roger, Calpernia, Don and me.
No, Calpernia wasn't there, but for the movie, I chose Soldier's Girl. Don had mentioned that it was the Calpernia Addams story, and Roger and I had met Calpernia not too long ago at The Other Side in Silverlake. So we were curious. Oh my gosh! What a tale! I won't go into much detail, but DAMN! That's the Clinton/Obama "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy for you. Anyway, we had drinks, lime daiquiris mostly, and nibbly bits. ANd some YouTube thrown in for fun ("I'm a Big Girl Now," anyone?) It was a nice night and I'm thankful for my friends. Next time, Don hosts. Join us.
Makin' Movies
The work-part of my work-week was spent with the Pearson Foundation teaching my students to make movies. It didn't go well. I won't complain, it was nice effort on their part, but it just didn't come together. Too much of a slow start and then a rushed ending and so many of my students didn't complete their films. I wonder how they all feel about the experience. I wonder if we'll enjoy the finished products when we see them in January.
Mismatched Lesbian Drag Twins
A truly great night out was Sunday. Don and I went to see The Mismatch Game at the LA Gay Center. My boycott of them was on temporary hiatus. It was a good night, lots of great laughs, and Don even won a pair of tickets to their comedy sketch show later in November. We met some nice guys in line, and one of them even got to be one of the contestants. If you haven't gone, you really should go next time they're in town.
After that, we were hungeez, so we went to find some food (and drinks). Hamburger Mary's called to us, and as luck would have it, we got there just before the start of their drag show. Funny how after watching Soldier's Girl we talked about not having seen any good drag shows in LA. That is still more or less true. But some bits were funny. And surprisingly, the sexiest bits were from Jolie Blonde, a sexy burlesque dancer who was just gorgeously pale and smooth and round where a woman ought to be round... Nice. I had high hopes for Bun Boy Nathan, but he turned out to be about as interesting as a bag of hair. Great legs, hot body, smokin' ass, don't get me wrong. but... wow. Nothing.
Don made friends with a lesbian called Sonia, who gave us some raffle tickets to impress some chick she wanted to go home with, and - surprise! - the tickets won brunch for two at HM on any Sunday. What a night - a show and a brunch. Oh, and I won a Sarah "Nailin' Palin" Palin mask. Yeah. Awesome, right?
