The Getty Villa up no the hills overlooking Malibu Beach is an amazing place. I used to enjoy going there for the antiquities - Greek and Roman statues older than Christianity. It closed down in 1996 for refurbishing and opened again a couple years ago. I hadn't been in all this time - though I'd been to the Getty Museum inland.
I took the last Wednesday of vacation to explore the museum. Yes, I did it on my own, and yes, it would have been nice to hang out with someone to talk with, but... what can ya do? So a few hours up in the bluffs, strolling among history, enjoying my wine and Greek chicken while people watching. Mostly older European people who really - well - they weren't that pretty to watch, let's just say that.
The Getty Villa has a great deal of art that has rather homo-erotic imagery. I was surprised. Not just the wangs on the statues - those are just accurate physical details on sculpture. No, I mean the pottery and artwork celebrating the male phallus: oversized erect penises proudly painted in high relief on drinking vessels, oversized penises urinating into vessels held by young male servants, statues that have only faces and penises carved into them. Interesting.
