UP IN THE AIR WITH JOEL

Rain was not going to stop me from having a good time. I was in the mood to go out, get out of the house. This new thing I tried on Tuesday night - leaving the house - has me hooked. And so when the opportunity came to join Joel for a movie, I jumped.

I let him pick this time, I don't think he was thrilled with my whole Twilight thing last time, even if Taylor is a dreamboat. So he chose Up in the Air. I wasn't sure what it was about, and I really, really liked it. But I haven't found a good review online to share with you about it. I guess I'm not like most people...

The movie is a bummer if you think it's important to have many deep relationships. And if you are deeply attached to your things. But as George Carlin once pointed out, when you spend your life paying for a place for your stuff, maybe something's out of whack. So this movie is about this guy who wants an empty backpack, see? And he flies all over the USA firing people for a living. And he meets this girl who wants to do it online, but he doesn't want to stay on the ground, so he tries to convince her that the job has to be done in person. And he meets this chick and they fuck every time they're in the same town (she flies a lot too). So far, I'm with the story. He's a happy man, living his dream.

But then he changes. And his life gets painful and hard. And it's shitty, because he was so happy just the day before. I think the lesson is don't change. Don't try new things, don't get involved with people, just... don't. And I loved it.

And then we went to the Bullet for drinks, and to discuss the deep philosophical significance of this movie. We disagreed on some points. Joel was just bummed. He felt saddened by the fact that relationships are death and to even try is to jump into the jaws of death. I saw it as a pronouncement of separation of love and sex - keep friends for the emotional support, keep cute boys for the rest. And don't get too attached to either of them.
